Warm Hawaiian sun. Lazy beach days. Flirty texts with her boyfriend back in Seattle.

These are the things seventeen-year-old Sloane McIntyre pictured when she imagined the summer she’d be spending at her mom’s home in Hawaii with her twin brother, Penn. Instead, after learning an unthinkable secret about her boyfriend, Tyler, and best friend, Mick, all she has is a fractured hand and a completely shattered heart.

Once she arrives in Honolulu, though, Sloane hopes that Hawaii might just be the escape she needs. With beach bonfires, old friends, exotic food, and the wonders of a waterproof cast, there’s no reason Sloane shouldn’t enjoy her summer. And when she meets Finn McAllister, the handsome son of a hotel magnate who doesn’t always play by the rules, she knows he’s the perfect distraction from everything that’s so wrong back home.

But it turns out a measly ocean isn’t nearly enough to stop all the emails, texts, and voicemails from her ex-boyfriend and ex-best friend, desperate to explain away their betrayal. And as her casual connection with Finn grows deeper, Sloane’s carefree summer might not be as easy to find as she’d hoped. Weighing years of history with Mick and Tyler against their deception, and the delicate possibility of new love, Sloane must decide when to forgive, and when to live for herself.

I was given an ARC by the publisher through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Summer of Sloane is a book that I was looking forward to since 2015, and it didn’t disappoint! To be honest, I considered only giving this 4 stars at first but quickly dismissed the idea and raised it to 4.5 because it doesn’t deserve just 4 stars. With strong elements of family, friendship and romance, this book was just the perfect summer read for me.

Sloane just found out that her boyfriend cheated on her with her best friend, and the worse thing is that he got her pregnant. The good thing is, it’s summer time, and summer time means going to Hawaii with her twin and spending time with their mom. There, Sloane got to spend time with her friend Mia, and meet Finn.

Summer of Sloane is a complicated book because a lot of things happened in it, but I think the most important theme of this book is forgiveness. I learned that you don’t have to forget to be able to forgive, which I think is something really important. And the cliche saying about how the truth can set you free? Well, her mothers’ truth did indeed set Sloane free, and that’s something that I really liked. I also liked how close she is to her twin brother Penn, and how she really communicates with her family. I love how there wasn’t any hate despite the parents being divorced, and how everyone is on civil terms with each other.

This book is not only a fun summer read, but also a meaningful one as well. And even though I didn’t relate to the main character because I’ve never been through what she has been through, I was really able to connect to the story and the main character. I definitely recommend this book, and Erin Schneider is surely an author that I will be looking out from now on.
